Wireframe Portrait
In Comprehensive Foundations(ARTZ 109) we were tasked with creating a self-portrait using metal wire. First the contours of the face and important features were drawn. We had to design the framework for how the wire would at the same time match the contours of our faces, while also support itself. I used two different types of wires of different colors in order to show my beard and eyebrows. There was also an element of stylization to consider, exaggerating some aspects of oneself to create a caricature.
The process
Next came ideation on how the different parts would be constructed. I had an idea how things might work together, but could not be sure until experimenting with the material itself.
Initially drawings were utilized to get an idea of the contours of the face and how those lines might be connected
The construction of the face was done so that from both the frontal and profile view it mimicked my appearance.
I decided against using the thinner copper wire for the hair on my head because it would have caused it to be too chaotic and messy.
